Directions
- Begin by taking 1 cup of unsalted butter and allowing it to soften at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Once softened, place the butter in a mixing bowl and use an electric mixer on medium speed to beat it for 2-3 minutes until it appears light and fluffy.
- With the mixer running on low speed, gradually incorporate 4 cups of sifted powdered sugar, adding one cup at a time. Mix until each addition is just combined.
- After mixing in all the powdered sugar, stop the mixer briefly and use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl. This ensures any sugar stuck to the sides is fully incorporated.
- Now, add ½ cup of apple butter to the mixture. Increase the mixer speed to medium and blend for 1-2 minutes until well combined.
- Pour in 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract while mixing on low speed. Continue blending until the icing is fluffy and smooth, which should take about 1 minute.
- If you'd like to evoke a hint of warmth, mix in ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Blend this on low speed until the spices are fully incorporated.
- Examine the consistency of your icing; if it’s too thick, gradually add more milk, one teaspoon at a time.
- Once you have the right consistency, increase the mixer speed to medium-high. Whip the icing for another 1-2 minutes until it becomes light, airy, and fluffy.
- Finally, taste your Apple Buttercream Icing and adjust the flavors as needed.
